Had the Aboriginal peoples possessed anything like the same level of military effectiveness, the puny garrison which comprised the Australia Command would have been hopelessly inadequate to the task. But the severe limitations imposed by traditional forms of war meant that bands of settlers suitably armed and equipped, to which were added later the skills of the Native Police, were sufficient to deal with the resistance offered by the indigenous peoples. In 1843 a party of armed settlers set out to ‘deal with’ a Maori chief at Wairau; they were routed, with twenty-two of their number killed.

Units might be dispatched from Britain to Australia, serve a period of six years there and in New Zealand, and then embark for India and another period of seven years or so before returning to Britain. India accounted for the largest number of British regiments, followed by Britain itself, North America, the West Indies and the Mediterranean. For regiments based in these areas, of course, could entail service in all sorts of places against all sorts of foes.

Officers and men did not contribute only military skills to the colonies, or serve only military ends. The army and navy played an important part in economic and social life and, in the early period at least, sometimes resorted to coercion in both areas. The early economic life of New South Wales was founded on the military commissariat. It became the chief market for colonial produce and paid with receipts drawn on the government store.
