You will need: 1. Sketch in your subject outline with a pencil Watercolours: natural grey (you can mix your own from 60% French ultramarine, 10% alizarin crimson and 30% yellow ochre but avoid using Payne’s grey); natural yellow or yellow ochre; natural blue or French ultramarine; intense violet; viridian hue; burnt sienna; opaque white or white gouache then use an old brush or masking brush to carefully apply masking fluid to the lighthouse. Next add a strip of masking tape just below the horizon line; before adding the tape, remove some of its stickiness by rubbing your fingers over the surface a few times.

Prepare pale washes of intense violet and natural blue then a stronger natural grey; wet the sky area down to the tape. Using your Size 20 round, first add violet to the bottom half of this area, followed by blue then grey. Dab the excess paint off your brush then gently roll in the clouds, using kitchen towel to lift out some lighter ones. Leave to dry. Next paint a few distant grey cliffs then remove the tape and use a pale viridian mixed with natural blue to paint the sea; use natural yellow to paint the beach at the same time.

Lay a flat, even tone to the egg by crosshatching gently with the HB pencil. Next apply a light with the blunt B pencil. Then indicate the cast shadow just gradually build the tone. Once this is done, tap underneath the egg; do not worry about neatness out the highlight on the top right of the egg with the at this stage. kneaded eraser. 3. Indicate a reflected light on the underside of the egg by hatching in the shadow area toward the bottom edge of the egg with the B pencil. Build and darken the tone with short hatching strokes that follow the contour, leaving the very bottom edge of the egg light.
